Movie: The Terminal

After thought: How can they make such a simple storyline into such an entertaining and touching movie? I totally enjoyed the show.

The Terminal is about Victor Narovski (Tom Hanks) who arrives at New York airport only to find out that he is denied entry into the USA because his country was caught in civil unrest. Thus, he is stuck in the terminal, where he had to learn to live among the other "citizens" of the airport.

Tom Hanks performance is effortless again. The pacing of the moving is superb, thanks to Steven Spielberg, the director. You find yourself laughing, crying, and saying "ahhhhhh" to almost every sequence of scenes in the movie. The movie lets you enjoy yourself, without you needing to ask questions, like how did Victor and Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) fell in love so quickly?

Good watch. Even better when you have someone that you like to share this movie with.

Movie: White Chicks

What is it with comedians and their fetish for dressing up as a girl? We have had Rob Scheinder did it in Hot Chick, and now the Wayans brothers doing it in White Chicks.

The movie started off with the FBI brothers trying to be Bad Boys, but ended up bungling the job. They were then assigned to escort 2 young daughters of a tycoon, who were target for kidnappers. They ended up taking over their places, minglings with the high societies and trying to be bitchy.

Overall, still an entertaining movie, but the laughs are far and in between, you don't get those laughs where you laughed till your stomach ache or still talked about after you walk out of the cinema. Watch if you needed a laugh though.

Movie: Ladder 49

Second movie "related" to 9/11 in 3 days. Wow. Gee.

Anyway, this movie has nothing to do directly with the event, although when the movie script was drafted, the settings was supposed to be in NY. Add to the fact the heroics of NYPD and NYFD during the events of 9/11, this movie can be viewed as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of a fireman.

The movie is about how Baltimore fireman Jack Morrison went into a rescue operation and accident befelled him. As he awaits rescue by his colleagues, the movie flashes back to significant events of his career, his rookie day, his first fire, him meeting his wife, setting his family, etc.

The movie is different from the typical "fireman" movies (Backdraft came to mind) that is all about adrenalin and heroics. This movie portrays the softer side of a fireman's life as well. The guilt and responsibilities facing a fireman and his family, the courage to continue to serve the community.

Movie: Fahrenheit 9/11

A documentary that won an Oscar and spent weeks at the top of the box office? How can anyone not watch this? But if you are looking for entertainment from the typical movie fare , then this might not be for you.

Plenty of hype has been around Michael Moore's production of this documentary. After catching a little of his previous work, "Bowling in Columbine" on Astro, I must say I was a little sceptical about how "entertaining" this movie would be. It turns out to be pretty interesting, if you have been following US politics and conspiracy theory surrounding involvement of certain Arab nations in the build up to the September 11 attack on the World Trade Centre.

I had thought the movie would have focus on the event of 9/11 and the aftermath of the event. It turns out that the movie is a strong criticism of President George W. Bush and his administration. The strongest message of the movie would be to question the need and reason for the invasion of Iraq, and the continuing war to gain control and rebuild the country.

Overall, it is quite an "entertaining" watch. You do get some light moment (mostly at the expense of President Bush) but once you watched the show, you will probably have no doubt think that President Bush is incompetent. I would only take this as a one-sided view from a strong criticizer of the current US administrator.
