Movie Review: Throw Down (Cantonese)

I've only heard about the movie when I came across some radio ad with Tony Leung Kar Fai mentioning something about his ONE move against Loius Koo and Aaron Kwok in the movie. When I found out the movie is being directed by Johnny To, I was a little confused... because Johnny To is known to direct "artsy-fartsy" movie... and I thought Throw Down might be more of one of those "slap-stick" comedy with plenty of fighting scenes (Judo).

The movie generally revolves around Sze-to (Louis Koo), a pub manager. In comes Tony (Aaron Kwok) looking to challenge Sze-to to a Judo fight. Apparently Sze-to used to be some big shot Judo fighter. But somehow, Sze-to has given up and started to drink alot and gambled. In between, a girl also joined them. I can't remember what's her name, and I wasn't all that impressed with her looks nor acting. The story runs out slowly, and seriously, there isn't much depth in the whole storyline. If people are commenting that Johnny To's storytelling is the whole point of the movie... then I'd say there's no point at all watching it. The whole story is just... erm... less than ordinary. Oh, apparently this movie is a tribute to a Japanese director. I can't remember his name either. It must be one of his old style story telling. Just not my cup of tea.

Well, at least I saw the trailer for the next Zhang Yimou's film... starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau and Zhang Ziyi. There was also a trailer on another film starring the Twins girls (Yee should love this...), along with Daniel Wu and Jacky Chan's son... who has really inherited his dad's big nose.

Hmmm... when I can remember the trailers more than the actual movie, you can tell how "impressed" I am with the movie...

Throw Down (Cantonese)
Louis Koo, Aaron Kwok, a chick, a little bit of Tony Leung, a little bit of Jordan Chan, a lot of irritating singing by a former member of the Grasshopper trio.
Rating: 2 of 5
